The devastated family of a three-year-old girl who was found dead and covered in blood after a brutal rape in her own home are now demanding the death penalty for the man who confessed to her murder last week.

Robert Fisher, 34, was arrested at the scene by police as he attempted to re-enter the crime scene and disrupt the ongoing investigation. On Tuesday, Fisher changed his plea to guilty, admitting his role in the rape and murder of the young girl. Josephina Cunningham’s brother has stated that the family is determined to seek the death penalty for Fisher.

Jy’Quan Stewart, 23, told the US Sun: “For me, it’s not over. I still plan to seek the death penalty. I want the world to see it. They must be shocked and know that they cannot do something like this.” Stewart insisted in an interview: “I want him to pay for what he did. I want him to get the death penalty. People who commit these crimes must pay for it, they must get the death penalty. This crime was really heinous, it was really heinous.”

Fisher had only been dating the mother of three-year-old Josephina for a week when she left him on July 7, 2023, to look after her daughter at the family’s home in Rensselaer, New York, just outside Albany, reports the Mirror US. When the mother returned, she found little Josephina lying on the bed, covered in blood and bruises.

The toddler had been brutally raped and murdered. She was immediately taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Stewart expressed shock that Fisher changed his confession just two weeks before the trial began. He suggested that Fisher probably changed his confession because he could not bear to face the family in court.

Stewart admitted he felt uncomfortable from the moment they met his mother’s boyfriend. “When I first met him, something felt off. It was a little weird. I just had a bad feeling in my stomach,” he confessed. “I’ve never seen my mother with a white man. Maybe that’s why, but I never spoke to her (about their relationship) – it was like she was hypnotized,” he added. “She was too in love with him. It was kind of weird, actually.”
