Wagner: Police shooting investigated, few details released as FBI conducts investigation | Community

“We are aware of the situation and are investigating. Because the investigation is ongoing, I cannot provide any additional information at this time,” FBI spokeswoman Diana Freedman told the Press & Dakotan.

Freedman is based in Minneapolis; her office also operates in South Dakota.

Charles Mix County Sheriff Randy Thaler said his office was not handling the case due to jurisdictional reasons.

“This incident occurred on tribal land in Wagner,” he said, referring to the Yankton Sioux Tribe for further investigation.

The South Dakota Attorney General’s office confirmed the same jurisdictional issue.

“The Attorney General’s Office is not involved. I was told the FBI is leading the investigation,” spokesman Tony Mangan told the Press & Dakotan.

“As far as I know, it happened on the reservation, so the FBI is handling it.”

The Press & Dakotan reached out to Wagner police seeking comment in an email Wednesday afternoon.

Although there was no immediate response, the Wagner Police Department posted an article about the incident on social media.

“FYI… Multiple agencies are actively supporting an ongoing investigation. There is NO active threat to the community,” the post said on Tuesday at 11:10 a.m.
