OSKALOOSA, IA – The Oskaloosa community is mourning the loss of Oskaloosa Middle School Principal Mark Scholes, who was killed in a tragic swimming accident in Lake Michigan. Scholes was on vacation with his family when the incident occurred at Ludington State Park.

According to reports from WZZM13 and Manistee News, Scholes was identified as the victim of the drowning incident on July 9, 2024. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but unfortunately attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Mark Scholes was a dedicated educator and leader known for his tireless commitment to the success and well-being of his students and staff. His passion for education and his impact on the Oskaloosa community were profound and left a lasting legacy.

In an official statement, Oskaloosa Schools expressed their deep sadness over Scholes’ untimely death. “Mark was a dedicated educator and leader who had an incredible impact on our students, staff and community. His passion for education and commitment to our students’ success were evident in everything he did. We all mourn this terrible loss.”

The school district also expressed its deepest condolences to the Scholes family and asked for privacy during this difficult time. Additional information regarding memorial services and other ways to support the Scholes family will be announced as soon as it is available.

Scholes joined the Oskaloosa School District in 2013 as assistant principal and was promoted to middle school principal in 2019.

In response to the tragedy, Oskaloosa Schools will offer grief counseling for students at Oskaloosa Middle School on Thursday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. School leaders will be on hand to offer advice and support to students in need.

The community is asked to think of Mark Scholes’ family and friends at this time of great loss.
