Houston Mayor’s Message for CenterPoint Energy Wreaks Havoc

HOUSTON – The mayor’s message was clear and precise. He then added that the city would not let people get away with it so easily.

“We’re going to hold them accountable,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire said at a Houston City Council meeting Wednesday.

The mayor’s comments come after a CenterPoint Energy vice president addressed the Houston City Council to tell everyone in attendance that the energy company had prepared for this storm.

The mayor added: “They need to take stock of the actions we’ve just taken,” Whitmire added.

However, Mayor Whitmire also made it clear that the city’s problems following Hurricane Beryl do not rest solely on CenterPoint’s shoulders.

Whitmire has repeatedly cited other problems the city has faced due to neglect by previous mayors, including his predecessor.

“You can’t solve a problem until you acknowledge there’s a problem,” Whitmire said. “This municipality hasn’t acknowledged its problems for years.”

At one point, the mayor raised his voice and did not mince his words.

“Yes, I’m angry, because people in positions of responsibility have neglected the people of Houston, you know that and I know that,” Whitmire said.
