What fast food app do Houstonians use to track power outages?

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas this week, causing widespread power outages affecting more than 2.26 million people in the Houston area. However, due to ongoing technical issues related to a storm in May, Houston’s main energy provider, CenterPoint Energy, was unable to provide an online map of where its services were out.

Luckily, Houstonians found a workaround that was very on-brand. The city and surrounding area is home to about 160 Whataburger restaurants, which have an app. People were checking the app to see which Whataburger locations were open, indicating that power had been restored to those areas.

A post sharing the news on X has been viewed more than 11 million times, with some noting the humorous nature of the situation. “Using the Whataburger app to track power outages after a hurricane is probably the most Houston thing I can think of,” one user commented. CenterPoint Energy has since posted a map showing where customers have had power restored, though as of Wednesday morning, more than 1.3 million customers were still without power.
