Former 49ers player Tashaun Gipson accepts six-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs

With the news surrounding Tashaun Gipson Sr. and his six-game suspension a little unclear, the player has spoken out and taken full responsibility for the rule violation.

The former San Francisco 49ers safety released a statement on the NFL’s decision to suspend him for six games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance rules. Gipson shed some light on the matter, explaining that he failed the league’s drug tests because of an unidentified dietary supplement.

The player did not disclose which supplement he was taking, but took full responsibility for his actions. In addition, he stated that he had not attempted in any way to gain an unfair advantage on the field.

“At one point during the offseason, I took a nutritional supplement that I thought was completely safe and in line with NFL guidelines,” Tashaun Gipson said in a statement. “It had nothing to do with performance, training or gaining any kind of advantage. I have competed at this level for a long time and have nothing but respect for the game and the community of players in it.”

“The NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances is clear and I take full responsibility for everything I put into my body. It is with great disappointment that I accept this suspension and I do so knowing that I never attempted to cheat the game. I look forward to returning for my 13th NFL season and helping a team compete for a championship.”

33-year-old Tashuan Gipson joined the 49ers on a one-year deal following the 2022 training camp. Originally brought in to replace the safety position while S Jimmie Ward was injured, “Gip” quickly rose through the ranks, starting 17 regular season games. 16 regular season starts followed in 2023, playing a total of 33 games for SF, including Super Bowl LVIII.

The University of Wyoming graduate has had a brilliant 12-year career in the NFL, playing for five franchises. Gipson has recorded a total of 684 tackles, 68 pass defenses and 33 interceptions. He has been outstanding for the Red & Gold, with 67.2 and 73.6 Focus on professional football Grade in the last two seasons.

The 49ers and Gipson reportedly have mutual interest in reuniting in 2024. Those talks must now take place after his six-game suspension.
