Sodus man arrested after Newark shooting | News

NEWARK — While the investigation is ongoing, village police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting last month — and they believe more arrests are possible.

In an updated press release sent to media on Tuesday, Newark Police Chief Rich Martin said 21-year-old Anthony Canady Jr. of Sodus was charged Monday with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 22, when officers responded to an initial report that a man had been “ambushed” in the village. While responding, officers learned of a report of shots fired on Madison Street.

Martin said vehicles were involved in the shooting and people fled the scene, creating a “very confusing and chaotic incident.” He added that officers stopped a vehicle, detained five people inside and later recovered a handgun and other evidence from Woodlane in a backyard on West Maple Avenue, which Martin declined to identify.

Martin said the man in the first incident suffered superficial cuts and scratches. He added that a home on Madison Street was struck by gunfire twice, once through a front window and a second time through the front door window. No one was struck by gunfire, and two shell casings were found on the street in front of the home.

Martin said the occupants of the arrested vehicle were released. He described them at the time as persons of interest.

Martin said Tuesday that Canady’s arrest was part of an ongoing investigation by his department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. He added that Canady was involved in the disturbance on Madison Street and was found with a loaded handgun.

Canady turned himself in to the Newark Police Department and was taken to the county jail to face charges.

Martin declined to provide details on the status of the investigation so far, but said more arrests were imminent.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are still working to piece together everything that happened,” he said in an email to the Finger Lakes Times“We know this was no accident.”
