Several charges are pending against a man who allegedly sexually abused an exchange student at the University of California, Los Angeles last week.

According to a statement from the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, Jeffery Stott Brewer Jr. is charged with sexual abuse with use of force and first-degree burglary in the presence of a person.

He was initially arrested by UCLA police and charged with assault with intent to commit a crime, false imprisonment, burglary and sexual abuse, according to a UCLA police press release.

The assault occurred in the early hours of July 5 in a room in the Saxon Suites, UCLA police confirmed. Although it was not immediately clear how Brewer Jr. got into the accommodations, prosecutors said he allegedly began loitering outside a dorm around 1:30 a.m. and was let in by a student who heard him knocking on the door.

He then left the building at the request of two student residents, officials said.

Less than an hour later, at 2:40 a.m., Brewer Jr. allegedly broke into another apartment in the same building and robbed the exchange student while she was sleeping.

He was taken into custody the same day of the attack, UCLA police said.

The 41-year-old, who is being held on $1.15 million bail, was arraigned on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to all charges, prosecutors said.

His next court hearing is scheduled for August 13.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment plus six years in prison.
