On Sunday evening, July 7, a semi-trailer truck overturned and blocked the causeway to and from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

The car accident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m., according to Matt Bowsher, deputy fire chief of the City of Beaufort/Port Royal Municipality.

The driver was the sole occupant of the tractor-trailer and was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.

What caused the accident and what the semi-trailer was transporting is currently unknown.

According to Bowsher, Parris Island Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene and the City of Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department provided assistance.

According to a Facebook post from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, crews worked through the night to clear the wreckage and reopen the causeway.

Calls to the Parris Island Fire Department were not immediately answered.
