Wife and daughters of BBC commentator John Hunt killed in crossbow attack

The BBC has confirmed that the three women murdered in a crossbow attack in Bushey, Hertfordshire, are the wife and two daughters of BBC racing commentator John Hunt.

Carol Hunt, 61, died along with two of her daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, following an attack on the family home on Tuesday evening.

The suspected killer, Kyle Clifford, 26, is currently on the run and police believe he is armed. A large-scale manhunt is currently underway in the Hertfordshire and North London region of England.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Chief Superintendent Jon Simpson of Hertfordshire Police said: “Our primary objective today is to protect public safety and locate Kyle Clifford, who is wanted in connection with the murder of the three women. We believe this was a targeted incident.

“We have extensive police resources deployed at various locations across north London and also in the Bushey area.

“Armed police officers and specialised search teams are also involved in the manhunt and are responding at high speed following the horrific incident, in which a crossbow is believed to have been involved. However, other weapons may also have been used.”

John Hunt, a former police officer and long-standing and widely respected commentator for BBC Five Live and Sky Sports Racing, was on duty at Lingfield Racecourse on Tuesday. In addition to his work in horse racing, he is a regular part of the BBC Sport team covering the Olympics.

Among his many friends in the world of racing is ITV racing presenter Matt Chapman, who said in a social media post: “There are no words needed for what happened to @HuntyCaller and his family today. The pain is unfathomable. Just know that we are all here for you John. We love you mate – racing loves you.”
