Armed man shot dead by police in Maine store parking lot – NECN

Authorities said a gunman was shot and killed in the parking lot of a store in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. after police responded to a report that 38-year-old Christopher Harriman was in a black Escalade armed with an AR-style rifle and making suicide threats at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike, state police said.

According to police, the woman also told dispatchers that Harriman threatened to hurt others.

When police arrived, Harriman, from Limerick, is said to have led them on a low-speed chase, at one point pointing the gun at officers from his car window.

According to authorities, Harriman, 38, was stopped in the parking lot of Stop N’ Save in Old Orchard Beach, where officers attempted to negotiate with him and convince him to surrender while he stood next to his vehicle.

Harriman then allegedly reached into his vehicle, grabbed the rifle and loaded a round into it. He was shot by Officer Ryan Phillips, police said.

Phillips has been placed on leave, which is standard practice when police officers are involved in the use of deadly force, while the Attorney General’s Office investigates, police said.
