WNY on the trail of Beryl’s remains as it crosses US

Buffalo, New York (WBEN) – The remnants of Beryl reached the Buffalo-Niagara region on Wednesday and will be felt in waves as the tropical storm system moves through.

“It’s going to be a pretty active day here in Western New York,” National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Mitchell told WBEN. “We’re going to see those rain waves intensify … with some heavy rain possible, particularly in the Niagara Frontier region in the afternoon.”

Precipitation will be significant in the region as the remnants of the massive storm move through the region Wednesday. “From Buffalo northward, it looks like we’ll get 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rainfall,” Mitchell said. “To the south, we’ll have less widespread rain, but we will have some severe thunderstorms.” Localized flash flooding is possible.

Outside of widespread rain, the risk of severe storms will be higher south and southeast of the city, Mitchell said. “The greatest threat will be high winds, with an isolated tornado threat, with the greatest likelihood of that south and southeast of the city.”

Additional risks of showers and some thunderstorms will persist through Thursday, before high pressure brings improved conditions by the end of the week.

Friday and the first half of the coming weekend are expected to be dry, with wet conditions persisting.
