Houston experiences 154,000 gallons of sewage spill after power outage

(Bloomberg) — Houston warned residents that 154,000 gallons of “domestic sewage” spilled into the city center after Hurricane Beryl dumped heavy rains and knocked out power to much of the metro area.

Residents who live within a half-mile of the leak, near the confluence of Buffalo and White Oak bayous, and who rely on private wells were warned Tuesday to boil their water for at least one minute before consuming it. Municipal water supplies are not affected, the Department of Public Works said in a statement.

“The public should avoid contact with waste, soil or water in the area potentially affected by the spill,” the statement said. “Do not swim in affected areas.”
