Punjab man dies in Dubai after ‘attack by Pakistani nationals’, body expected at home soon | Chandigarh News

A 21-year-old man from Punjab’s Ludhiana district died in Dubai in June after he was allegedly “attacked by a group of Pakistani nationals” during an encounter. The body of the man, identified as Manjot Singh of Lohatbaddi village in Raikot district, is expected to arrive home by Friday, according to his family.

Manjot was the only son of his parents, and his father Dilbag Singh, a labourer, had taken a loan to send him to Dubai to earn a living for the family.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Dilbag Singh said his son had gone to Dubai about a year ago where he was working as a labourer in a pharmaceutical company. Singh said his son died when there was a clash between two groups of men working in Dubai.

He said that although the incident allegedly took place on June 21, they came to know of his death only days later after calls to his son went unanswered. “Later, his friends told us about the encounter and said that a group of Pakistani men attacked my son with a knife and other sharp weapons. He died,” the emotional father said.

Singh said Manjot lived with five others in a rented apartment in Dubai’s Jebel Ali area. “Out of five of his roommates, one was from Pakistan. We were told that one of his roommates had a fight with a group of 12 other Pakistanis who had come from outside to attack. He also called my son for help. My son was not directly involved in a fight. He only went there on the request of his roommate and the rival group attacked him with a knife, leading to his death. We were told that four of them have been arrested,” he added.

Festive offer

The father said the foreign ministry had informed them that his son’s body was expected to arrive at home on Friday. “We are agricultural labourers without land. I sent my son abroad after taking a loan of Rs 200,000. We have nothing left. He was my only hope,” the father said.

According to Manjot’s family, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and local MP for Fatehgarh Sahib Amar Singh coordinated the repatriation of their son’s body.
