Army investigates disappearance of nearly 100 pistols from CMP in Anniston

ANNISTON, Alabama (WBMA) — The Army Criminal Investigation Division is offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of nearly 100 pistols that went missing from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in Anniston.

The Southern Field Office was informed on May 10 that 98 1911A1 pistols were reported missing between September 2019 and March 2022.

A reward of up to $10,000 will be offered for credible information leading to the arrest or conviction of the person(s) responsible for the theft.

If you have any information that can help locate the weapons or the people responsible for them, you are asked to call the Army CID Southern Field Office at 706-709-0738 or report the tip online. You can remain anonymous.

The information was confirmed by ABC 33/40 on July 9.

However, we have contacted the US military’s Criminal Investigation Division several times since the beginning of June by phone and email. ABC 33/40 had asked for more information about the missing weapons, but had not received a response at the time of publication.

Our questions from 05.06.2024:

• Are you (Army Criminal Investigation Department) Investigation into about 100 allegedly missing pistols?
• What is being done to investigate this further?
• Were these weapons safe?
• When were the missing firearms first noticed?
• When did the investigation begin?
• Have any employees been fired as a result of the ongoing investigation?
• What measures are in place to prevent this and what measures will be taken in the future?
• Were the missing weapons found or could they be tracked down?

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Army Criminal Investigation made the following statement to ABC 33/40 on July 9:

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Department has been notified of a significant number of 1911A1 pistols reported missing from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in Anniston, Alabama, between September 2019 and March 2022. Army CID is actively seeking any relevant information related to the missing pistols and is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to their recovery and/or for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons criminally responsible.
