An airport in Hawaii was briefly evacuated after a Japanese man was found with two defused grenades in his hand luggage, police said after his arrest.

An airport in Hawaii was briefly evacuated after a Japanese man was found with two defused grenades in his hand luggage, police said after his arrest.

On Tuesday, officials evacuated the terminal while a bomb disposal squad was on site to examine the suspicious items discovered using an X-ray machine.

“Hilo International Airport experienced a brief shutdown for just over an hour,” Hawaii Police said in a statement.

The bomb disposal service determined that the objects were detonated grenades, police reported. This means that they are not dangerous.

A 41-year-old Japanese man was arrested for “terrorist threat” and is still in custody, police said.

“The police remind the public that replica explosives, such as hand grenades, are prohibited in checked baggage and carry-on baggage.”
