West Virginia man killed in accident in western Maryland

GRANTSVILLE, Maryland (WBOY) – A West Virginia man was pronounced dead Tuesday following a crash in Garrett County, Maryland.

According to a Maryland State Police press release, officers from the state police’s McHenry Barrack responded to a car crash on New Germany Road in Grantsville at approximately 4:51 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a Toyota Tacoma had left the road and entered a wooded area, and a Freightliner utility vehicle was parked on the side of the road.

The driver of the Tacoma was James Thomas Shillingburg III of Ridgely, West Virginia, who was trapped and pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner, Charles Meyers of Sharpsburg, Maryland, was not injured.

After a preliminary investigation, troopers said the Tacoma was traveling southbound while the Freightliner was traveling northbound. At some point, the Tacoma left the roadway on a right-hand curve, causing it to cross the yellow lines and strike the Freightliner. The Tacoma then continued northbound on the roadway before leaving the road and traveling down an embankment into a wooded area.

The Maryland State Police investigation is ongoing. Officers were assisted at the scene by the Maryland Natural Resources Police, Grantsville Fire Department and Northern Garrett Rescue Squad.
