Government warns of “transnational fraud”

Technologically savvy scammers have an easier time targeting victims today as the age of machine learning and artificial intelligence permeates every aspect of people’s lives, both personal and professional. Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting smartphone users across the country as they receive a lot of fake calls and SMS. Scammers are even creating fake websites and deceiving unsuspecting users with graphics.

The Indian government’s cyber agency, Cyberdost, has issued a warning about a new scam that is targeting iPhone users exclusively. According to Cyberdost, iPhone users are sent messages via iMessage informing them that a package cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address.

Cyberdost’s tweet reads: “New transnational #scam alert: #iPhone users appear to be receiving fraudulent messages via #iMessage regarding packages/courier services from randomly selected accounts. Clicking on suspicious links can be avoided and read receipts for such messages can be disabled.”

The fraudulent message asks recipients to respond within 24 hours to avoid returning the package. It contains a web link. Cyberdost warns that it is a scam and clicking on the link can make you a victim. They advise reporting such messages and not clicking on suspicious links. In addition, users should never share their bank account information or send money to unknown people.

Important tips to avoid this scam

  • Do not click on links in suspicious messages.
  • Disable read receipts for messages from unknown senders.
  • Reputable companies will not pressure you to provide an urgent response or threaten to return a package.
  • Never share your bank account information and never send money to unknown people.

It is recommended that you report such messages to the relevant authorities if you come across them. iPhone users can protect themselves from this phishing scam by following these measures.
