Man charged with murder after North Carolina woman found dead in Edmond

A man has been charged with first-degree murder after the body of a North Carolina woman was discovered near a storage facility in Edmond on Friday.

On Tuesday, Edmond police released bodycam footage.

The timeline

According to Edmond Police, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:25 p.m. on July 5 regarding a possible deceased person at a warehouse near Coltrane Place and East 2nd Street.

According to police, officers found the body of a dead woman, later identified as 30-year-old Elyse Marie Betz.

Elyse Betz’s family reported her missing in June, but last week they received a devastating call telling them she had been found nearly 1,500 miles from home.

Police said officers learned Betz was staying at a nearby hotel with 36-year-old Kyle Robert Fedus. Police later said Fedus was wanted in North Carolina for robbery with a firearm.

Betz’s family says they had only known Fedus for a few weeks.

Police found Fedus at another hotel in Edmond on July 6 and he was arrested on his outstanding warrant.

Below you can see the body camera footage that police released on Tuesday:

According to police, Fedus confessed to a pact with Betz in which they “agreed to inject themselves with an overdose of methamphetamine and fentanyl if the police caught them.”

Fedus told police that they left their hotel on foot on July 4 because they were “afraid of the police presence.”

Police confirmed that Fedus said they ran through the woods and ended up at the camp facility, where they decided to commit suicide by overdose.

According to police, Fedus admitted to giving Betz the lethal dose after injecting himself.

Police said the medical examiner’s office had performed an autopsy and toxicology results were pending.

What’s next?

Family members say Elyse Betz was incredibly successful and worked as an engineer.

“She was an engineer, part of the first class of engineers at her private girls’ college, she rode horses and played field hockey,” said Elyse’s sister Laura Beckman.

According to a court document, her vehicle was discovered at a hotel less than a mile from the storage facility.

Investigators say Fedus claimed to be her boyfriend, which Betz’s sister, Laura Beckman, denies.

“I believe she was kidnapped through manipulation and then murdered by him,” Beckman said.

Laura says that Elyse, who was struggling with the death of her mother, sought alcohol treatment and met Fedus there.

“Unfortunately, he found an easy target to manipulate,” Beckman said.

“If you knew my sister was dead and you were supposed to be dead, why did you leave her there? Why didn’t you call 911? And if you were supposed to kill yourself, why didn’t you kill yourself?” Beckman said.

Her family now vows to seek justice. “I’m not going to let him get out of prison just because of my body,” Beckman said.
