Punjab police officer arrested for raping 29-year-old woman

A sub-inspector (SI) of the Punjab Police was arrested on suspicion of raping a 28-year-old woman after befriending her on social media.

The accused Gagandeep Singh, who works as an SI in Amritsar, is already married and concealed this from the victim.

According to sources, the accused had sent the 29-year-old woman a friend request on social media in 2022. She initially rejected his advances but later started talking to him and eventually entered into a physical relationship with him without knowing that he was married.

Two months ago, the victim discovered that she was pregnant and confided in Gagandeep, who then took her to a private hospital in Batala in Gurdaspur where an abortion was performed. The procedure resulted in severe complications and infection in her abdomen, forcing her to undergo treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research for a month. As she was still undergoing treatment, the police could not initially record her statements.

After verifying the complaint of her legal representative, a case of rape and cheating was registered against the SI at Sector 36 police station. The accused is currently absconding. According to sources, the accused had offered to ₹18 lakh to the victim so that he does not reveal the matter to anyone.
