Bowie police warn of rise in ‘jugging’ robberies – NBC4 Washington

Police in Bowie, Maryland, warned of an increase in the number of armed bank robberies over the past two weeks in which robbers have stolen hundreds of dollars from customers.

According to Bowie police, this trend is called “jugging,” and robbers do not steal money from the bank itself, but from customers who leave the bank and withdraw cash from ATMs.

Bowie Police Chief Dwayne Preston said his city has seen four such crimes since Wednesday. The robbers are using stolen vehicles and robbing banks in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties, police said.

Last week, two people died in a chase that began in Anne Arundel County, went through Prince George’s County and ended with a crash in DC.

Investigators believe the vehicle in question was involved in other armed robberies in the Washington area.

Bowie police have not released any information about whether there is a connection between the gangs that committed the armed robberies.

“If you see anything that doesn’t look right or needs to be investigated, call us immediately so we can come and investigate,” Preston said. “But probably the most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings.”

Prince George’s County police also reported an increase in armed bank robberies.

Police recommend going to the bank with a friend or relative to help keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
