In May, Washington imposed sanctions on Nicaragua, accusing the country of supporting the trafficking of undocumented migrants trying to reach the United States.

Colombia said migrants are increasingly using a secret route between San Andrés and Nicaragua to avoid the dangerous crossing through the Darién jungle between Colombia and Panama and head north through Central America and eventually to Mexico and the U.S. border.
