Young man honored for heroic efforts to save children in Havana disaster

The young Cuban, Lisandro Guzman Hernandezwas showered with gratitude for his brave attempt to rescue children and other passengers from a burning vehicle following an accident on Havana’s eight-lane highway.

Guzmán suffered significant burns during his commendable effort and was considered one of the heroes of this tragic event, as the user described Oslaine Martí on the social media platform Facebook.

“Honor and recognition to another hero who, as you can see, suffered burns while helping to rescue the children and other passengers from the burning car. My respect and get well soon,” Martí wrote.

A tragic accident in Havana

The accident occurred on July 5, when a Kia Picanto rolled over several times and eventually caught fire. The tragic incident left a 7-year-old girl trapped in the vehicle dead, and her 17-year-old aunt succumbed to her injuries in hospital hours later.

A paramedic who helped the family expressed regret that the girl could not be rescued immediately. Miguel Sarmientoa young man from pre-hospital emergency medicine, explained on Facebook that his team was able to help two babies in time, but the other child could not be saved.

“We had the honor of responding to this emergency and were able to save the lives of the babies present on the scene. Mobile124 is listening,” he noted in the group “Accidentes Automovilísticos en Cuba”.

Other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital.
