After a 19-year hiatus, Clark Atlanta University has relaunched its highly regarded Music Education major. Committed to maintaining its legacy of academic distinction and cultural enrichment, Clark Atlanta is committed to providing a transformative education with a primary focus on developing future generations of music innovators and educators.

For more than 30 years, Clark Atlanta has been a shining example of excellence in the arts and education. The decision to reinstate the Music Education major is a testament to Clark Atlanta’s commitment to respecting its history while embracing the opportunities it presents. With music always being a part of Clark Atlanta’s identity, this new launch serves to reinforce the university’s unwavering commitment to using the transformative power of music to inspire creativity, scholarship, and community engagement.

The Department of Music is proud to reintroduce the Music Education major and commemorate this important milestone in Clark Atlanta’s history. “Music is a universal language that transcends time, strengthens connections and inspires greatness,” said Phil Davis, the new chair of CAU’s Department of Music.

Through this redesigned program, students will graduate with the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm needed to succeed in their roles as music educators and arts advocates in their communities.

Clark Atlanta’s new Music Education major will offer a comprehensive curriculum that combines theory and practice while covering a wide range of musical genres and instructional strategies. To prepare them for success in today’s fast-paced educational environment, students will have access to top-notch academic mentors, well-equipped facilities, and immersive learning opportunities.

“At Clark Atlanta University, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to explore their musical talents and pursue their passions,” said Charlene Gilbert, Dean of Clark Atlanta University. “The relaunch of the Music Education major underscores the University’s commitment to providing inclusive and innovative educational opportunities that empower students, through music, to realize their dreams and make a positive impact on the world.”

Clark Atlanta University was formed from the merger of Atlanta University and Clark College, both of which hold a unique place in the annals of African American history. Atlanta University, founded in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, was the first institution in the country to grant graduate degrees to African Americans. Clark College, founded four years later in 1869, was the first four-year liberal arts college in the country to serve a primarily African American student body. Notable alumni include Kenya Barris, Jacque Reid, Kenny Leon, and Pinky Cole.
