Help Lakewood boy injured after devastating bike accident

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – A 7-year-old Lakewood boy is recovering after a bicycle accident in southern Colorado last month.

Noah Calvin’s family said they were on a trip to Fountain in June when he and his older brother Zahkie went for a bike ride one morning.

Zahkie said he and Noah were riding down a hill. Shortly afterward, he noticed that his little brother had fallen off his bike and was injured.

“I just dropped my bike and then ran over there,” Zahkie said. “Then I carried him up the hill. Then I ran up and got my parents.”

Noah’s mother, Shawntell Calvin, said she initially thought Noah had simply run out of air.

“But he was blue,” she said. “He was just trying to get some air. He just couldn’t get any air.”

Noah was taken to Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs, where his family learned that his larynx was broken in three places.

Noah’s family said the cause of the injury was still unclear, but they believed the handlebars of the bike may have been the cause.

“That’s the only thing we can think of… We don’t really know exactly how it could have happened,” Shawntell said.

Noah’s family said he has not been able to speak since the accident, so they had to think of other ways to communicate with him.

“Sometimes he writes on a whiteboard, or we can see – when he forms the words with his mouth, sometimes we can understand them,” Zahkie said.

Shawntell said her son also learned sign language.

“He has buttons he can push when he wants to communicate,” she said. “They can’t give us any guarantees whether he’ll get his voice back or not. It’s all just a long process.”

His family said Noah remains in good spirits despite everything he has been through.

“It’s reassuring that he’s not panicking. It allows us to remain stoic in the situation, even though we’re very scared inside, not only because of the situation he’s in, but because he’s dealing with it so bravely,” said his father, Christopher Victorian.

He said his son was friendly, outgoing, active and “everyone’s friend.”

“He keeps my spirits up, you know, because he’s in such a good mood,” Christopher said.

Noah will undergo another operation this week, after which the family will have more information about what the future may hold.

Noah’s accident occurred in the middle of his family’s move from Lakewood to Colorado Springs.
