Gurgaon: A Pocso court in Panipat on Monday sentenced a man (25) to 20 years in prison for kidnapping a 13-year-old girl and raping her in captivity for two weeks until she managed to escape. Panipat Additional Court Judge Sukhpreet Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict Neeraj in his July 8 verdict. The fast-track court directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay the youth a compensation of Rs 100,000 for her recovery and rehabilitation. The case dates back to 2022, when the girl was reported missing. Two weeks later, on January 21, the girl came home and told her family that Neeraj was keeping her captive and repeatedly raping her. In his verdict, Additional Sessions Court Judge Sukhpreet Singh rejected the defence counsel’s argument that Neeraj had been falsely incriminated, noting that such an attitude without producing any evidence constituted “irresponsible conduct” on the part of the accused. “It is clear that the court, while appreciating the victim’s evidence, must keep in mind that in the context of the values ​​prevailing in the country, particularly in rural India, it would be unusual for a victim to fabricate a false story of sexual assault to incriminate an innocent person,” the judge said.
