CPS Energy sends dozens of workers to help Houston amid power outage

SAN ANTONIO — CPS Energy has sent dozens of employees to Houston to help restore power to more than 1 million residents after damage from Hurricane Beryl on Tuesday.

CPS Energy officials confirmed they are sending 60 employees, including equipment operators, pole and line crews, fleet personnel and safety professionals.

“We are ready. We are prepared,” said Guillermo Hernandez, a utility employee with CPS Energy.

Hernandez received a call yesterday saying he was headed to Houston. He said the trip would likely take several days for the crews.

“We will install poles and remove the old poles,” Hernandez said.

Houston’s electricity provider, CenterPoint Energy, also requested help from other companies in the area, bringing an additional 10,000 workers to help with the utility restoration effort.

“It’ll be routine work for us, just longer hours. Lots of humidity, rain,” Hernandez said.

According to CenterPoint Energy, more than 1.5 million customers are still without power and with the storm having passed, the heat is expected to return as workers try to quickly clean up.

Hernandez said the hardest part was leaving his family behind, but he knows there are so many other families who need his help.

“Seeing the customers happy… it’s definitely worth it,” Hernandez said.

In May, CPS Energy workers were dispatched to Garland, Texas, after severe storms knocked out power to thousands in the area.
