Jefferson County man charged with drunken driving and assault with a vehicle after crash in Denmark Township | WWTI

TOWN OF DENMARK, NY (WWTI) – A 57-year-old Carthage man is facing charges after he was reported to have an accident in the Town of Denmark Tuesday evening.

According to the New York State Police, officers responded to a crash involving a car and a dirt bike at 10234 Plank Road in the town of Denmark around 7:45 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed a red 2023 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Darrin Ashcroft.

He was traveling south on Plank Road in the town of Denmark when he attempted to pass a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling in the same direction. Due to oncoming traffic, Ashcroft was unable to completely pass and so moved back into the lane, striking the dirt bike.

The driver of the 2007 Kawasaki was a 16-year-old from Copenhagen. He was flown by helicopter to Upstate Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Ashcroft allegedly showed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for drunk driving. He was transported to State Police Headquarters in Lowville for processing and was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.13%.

Ashcroft was charged with second-degree assault, a class “E” felony. He also received a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. All tickets had to be returned to the City of Denmark later in August.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Rutland Fire Department, Lewis County Search and Rescue Unit and Lifenet.
