Spare the Air warning for another heatwave

A renewed flare-up of heat in the Bay Area on Wednesday will bring with it a “Spare the Air” warning.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued its fifth warning of the year on Tuesday, declaring ozone concentrations in the ground-level atmosphere hazardous to health.

According to the district, air quality in the interior areas of the East Bay is likely to be unhealthy for the elderly and very young, as well as those with heart, respiratory or other health problems. In the South Bay and North Bay, air is expected to be only moderately healthy.

The smog will result from the last remnants of a high pressure system that has swept over California and will bring back the heat and form a low blanket over the atmosphere, meteorologists said. Temperatures in the hottest areas of the East Bay and higher elevations will range between 102 and 106 degrees on Wednesday and between 105 and 110 degrees on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in the South Bay are expected to range between 91 and 98 degrees on both days.

The district issued two warnings during the first phase of a heat wave that hit the region just before July 4.
