Hackers demand $16,000 and Target purchases

DARE COUNTY, NC (WAVY) – The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a Facebook scam.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office received a call from a person who reported that someone had hacked their Facebook account and posted a meme of a child showing their butt to other children in a classroom.

This led to Facebook suspending his account for child pornography. The man says he googled Facebook’s number and came across 816-946-2404. After calling the number, he gave the person he spoke with his driver’s license number and home address.

The man said he was then asked to send them $16,000 and he agreed to do so. After that, he was asked to make several purchases at Target, but he refused and hung up.

He says his bank was able to block several debits later that same day.
