First warning forecast | Extreme heat today, relief tomorrow

(WSAZ) – A heat advisory is in effect for central parts of the WSAZ broadcast area until 8 p.m. today. With temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees this afternoon and evening, you’ll need to drink several sips of water every 10 to 20 minutes. Be sure to take breaks in air-conditioned rooms, swimming pools or wading pools, and know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Meanwhile, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl are currently moving through the region, which is one of the reasons so much moisture is being released into our atmosphere. The humidity will be what’s bothering you today – not necessarily the heat. Highs of over 100 degrees are expected in the afternoon when the sun comes out, with the high humidity helping to push the aforementioned heat indices above 100 degrees. To the west, we’ll see some showers and storms with more force this afternoon, with some reaching the western parts of our observation area (west of US-23) by the evening.

Although there is a risk of severe weather toward Cincinnati and Louisville, our region will be very little affected by the storms as they are not as strong once they reach our area. The isolated storm threat will continue into the night. Increasing winds and very moist air in the sky will lead to lows that will be very warm – only up to 25 to 30 degrees. It will definitely be a night for the air conditioning.

The remnants of Beryl will continue to have an impact during the morning hours, bringing a cold front through the region with an isolated risk of rain or storms. Overall, the danger is low and the region should not be too badly affected by this system. However, winds will pick up in the afternoon. Wind speeds should reach up to 25 mph, with sustained winds of 10-15 mph.

High pressure will build during the day on Thursday, meaning the region will experience very nice weather. Northerly winds will continue to blow with cooler temperatures (down to just over 27 degrees) and high pressure will bring sunshine to the region. However, high pressure will move east again and temperatures will rise above 30 degrees again towards the end of the week and early next week.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop during the day on Friday, but the chances will increase early next week when isolated showers and thunderstorms develop on Sunday and Monday. Again, temperatures of around 30 degrees are expected.
