Louisville police report says pedestrian killed in collision with car

DENVER (KDVR) — A driver traveling eastbound on Via Appia Way on Monday struck and killed a pedestrian, police reported.

Louisville police said officers arrived at the intersection of Sagebrush Way and Via Appia Way around 5:45 p.m. Monday. Officers spoke with the 65-year-old female driver, who was still at the scene and cooperating with the investigation.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will notify the pedestrian’s next of kin. Victim advocates and other responders are assisting the victim’s family and the driver. Louisville Police did not release any information identifying the victim.

“The Louisville Police Department extends its deepest concern and condolences to everyone affected by this tragic accident,” the agency wrote on Facebook. “Tragic incidents like this remind us all to be cautious on the roads.”

The agency provided some safety advice. For drivers, Louisville police pointed out that cars yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. If pedestrians are about to cross a street or are already doing so, stop the vehicle completely. In addition, drivers should never pass a vehicle that has stopped or is slowing down at a crosswalk.

Cyclists should also yield the right of way to pedestrians, Louisville police said. Cyclists should use marked bike lanes or multi-use paths when available and obey all traffic laws, signs and signals. Cyclists should always wear a helmet and clothing that is visible to motorists and avoid all distractions – such as earbuds or headphones.

Pedestrians also have responsibilities when near roads. The authority reminded people to always cross roads at marked pedestrian crossings, to obey signals and make sure the road is clear before crossing and that all vehicles stop to cross the road, even if a driver waves at them.

Finally, the agency reminded pedestrians not to assume that a vehicle will see them or stop to allow them to cross the road.
