Englewood school principal and her son killed in car crash abroad

A beloved Englewood school principal is being remembered after she died in a car crash overseas.

Dr. Daniela Small-Bailey was the principal of Dr. John Grieco Elementary School. Police say she died in a head-on collision with a police car in South Africa on July 4. Her son, a police officer and another woman were also killed in the accident, authorities said.

The school issued a statement saying, in part, that Small-Bailey was a pillar of the Englewood Public Schools community, serving the district for nearly two decades with a “vibrant and towering personality.”

Small-Bailey also pastored Bethel AME Church in Passaic.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the elementary school.
