MPs call on the federal government to suspend the agreement with Samoa

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement

recalls that the Samoa agreement signed by the Federal Government with the European Union was met with strong criticism, with many disapproving of the supposed recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

In introducing the motion on Tuesday, MP Aliyu Madaki drew attention to the clause highlighting “gender equality,” calling it a Trojan horse that could harm the country’s morals.

The House of Representatives also instructed its relevant committees to investigate controversial provisions of the agreement.

Nevertheless, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu and his counterpart in the Ministry of Information Mohammed Idris said at a press conference on Saturday that Nigeria would not enter into any agreement that contradicted the constitution and the religious and cultural sentiments of the country’s diverse population.

Bagudu said Nigeria signed the agreement to strengthen food security and inclusive economic development, among other things.
