Chase Elliott faces possible NASCAR penalty after incident in Chicago

Chase Elliott passed Daniel Suarez in the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Chicago Street Course, but that didn’t last long. Suarez got back up to Elliott and spun him after being too aggressive. Elliott then chased Suarez for the checkered flag, slowing him down and showing his displeasure at the No. 99 car’s window net down. Could the driver of the No. 9 car receive a penalty, though?

NASCAR will investigate the incident between Elliott and Suarez and decide if a penalty is necessary. Elliott would be the driver facing a potential penalty since Suarez didn’t do much after the checkered flag. Although the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion has a winning record, no points penalty is expected since it came after the incident.

Any penalties NASCAR might impose would come in the form of a fine on Tuesday or Wednesday. The same goes for the situation between Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman, which could result in the 23XI Racing driver receiving a penalty. Elliott may not even be penalized, but NASCAR will look at the situation this week.
