1 person killed in apartment fire in DeKalb County

DECATUR, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a deadly apartment fire overnight in DeKalb County.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Snapwoods Apartments on Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur. The DeKalb Fire Department said emergency crews rescued a person from the laundry room of a burning apartment. The man later died at the hospital.

DeKalb Fire Chief Jaeson Daniels said the victim is believed to be in his 60s. He said someone else lives in the apartment, but he was not with the man at the time of the fire.

Investigators believe the fire probably started in a bedroom.

The fire department was able to contain the fire to the man’s apartment, but four families were affected and have become homeless due to smoke and water damage. The Red Cross is helping to relocate some families.
