Children accidentally set fire that left a young girl dead and a man seriously injured – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

LANCASTER, Ohio – A fire that killed a young girl and seriously injured a man has been determined to have been accidentally set by children.

News Center 7 previously reported that the Lancaster Fire Department was called to the 800 block of North Pierce Avenue at around 2:59 p.m. on June 26 for a report of a house fire.

According to a fire department press release, emergency responders found 55-year-old Robert Daniels in the front yard, where he was receiving medical attention from a Fairfield County Sheriff’s deputy.

The house was engulfed in flames. Daniels was taken to the Ohio State Medical Center in critical condition.

54-year-old Sherry Eck and two young boys were able to escape the house before emergency services arrived.

A three-year-old girl was found in the house by the fire department and pronounced dead at the scene.

A Lancaster firefighter was also injured and suffered burns. He was taken to Fairfield Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The fire investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an accident started by children playing with a lighter.

The house had no working smoke detectors and was badly damaged by the fire.
