Concern after child fatality on Northwest Fisher Lane

Neighbors say traffic had to be slowed after a child was killed in a fatal crash near Saylorville Lake on Sunday. The crash happened on Northwest Fisher Lane, which is on the east side of the lake near the Cottonwood Recreation Area. “Nobody was screaming. No tires screeching. It was just weird,” said Dan Zimmerman. Zimmerman and his family heard the crash around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. And then he heard a child die in one of the cars. “I was pretty devastated when I heard the aftermath of the crash. We have four children here and we try to keep them as far off this road as possible,” said Zimmerman. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened in a split second. A Toyota SUV was traveling north on NW Fisher Drive. “It crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound vehicle,” said Polk County Sheriff’s Capt. Ryan Evans. The impact pushed the Subaru SUV into the ditch. Two passengers walked away. A driver and a child were in the Toyota. The child later died at the hospital. “When you arrive on the scene of an accident and you see a child that was involved in something that they had no control over, you know, and still has a lot of life left to live. And when it’s that short, it’s a sad thing,” Evans said. Some neighbors say cars often speed on the two-lane winding road. “Oh, I definitely hear cars speeding up and down that road all the time. And that’s basically any time of day,” Zimmerman said. Evans says the department knows about speeders, but that they don’t usually end in fatal crashes. “It’s not an area where we’ve had problems reported to us. It was a surprise to a lot of people when we found out there was an accident of that magnitude right there,” Evans said. The sheriff’s office says they are waiting to release the name of the child who died in the crash. They’re still notifying relatives.” Download the free KCCI app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google PlayGet the latest headlines from KCCI

Neighbors say traffic needs to be slowed after a child was killed in a fatal accident near Saylorville Lake on Sunday.

It happened along Northwest Fisher Lane, which is on the east side of the lake near the Cottonwood Recreation Area.

“Nobody screamed. There were no screeching tires. It was just really weird,” said Dan Zimmerman.

Zimmerman and his family heard the accident around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. And then he heard that a child died in one of the cars.

“I was pretty devastated when I heard the aftermath of the crash.
“We have four children here and we try to keep them as far off the streets as possible,” Zimmerman said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred in a split second. A Toyota sedan was traveling north on NW Fisher Drive.

“It crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound vehicle,” said Polk County Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Evans.

The impact pushed the Subaru SUV into the ditch. Two passengers were killed. A driver and a child were in the Toyota. The child later died in hospital.

“When you get on the scene and you see a child who was involved in something that they had no control over, you know, and they’ve got a lot of life left to live. And when it’s that short, it’s a sad thing,” Evans said.

Some neighbors report that cars often drive too fast on the two-lane, winding road.

“Oh, I definitely hear cars racing up and down this street all the time. And that’s pretty much all the time of day,” Zimmerman said.

Evans says the agency is aware of speeding, but that it does not usually result in fatal accidents.

“It’s not an area where there have been reports of problems. A lot of people were surprised when we learned that there had been a collision of this magnitude right there,” Evans said.

The sheriff’s office says the name of the child who died in the accident is not yet being released. Family members are still being notified.
