Suspect arrested for sexually assaulting woman at Wakefield home – NBC New York

A suspected sex offender has been arrested after police say he carried out a terrifying attack in which he broke into the victim’s Bronx home and abused her in her bed while she slept.

According to police, the suspect entered the 20-year-old woman’s apartment near the corner of East 230th Street and White Plains Road in the Wakefield neighborhood through a window at around 4:30 a.m. on June 29. The victim was sleeping in her bed when she was sexually assaulted.

The suspect then fled. In the days that followed, police spoke to neighbors and distributed leaflets depicting the wanted man. CCTV footage showed him walking down the street on the night of the incident.

On Monday, police arrested 30-year-old Claudio Miranda in connection with the alleged attack. He was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree burglary and bribery of a witness. Information about Miranda’s Bronx-based attorney was not immediately available.

This attack occurred about a month after another incident less than a half-mile away. Police said a man put a woman in a chokehold and attempted to rape her near East 235th Street and Vireo Drive. A suspect, Miguel Rivera, has been identified as a suspect in the incident who is believed to be unrelated.

Current NYPD data shows that more rapes and other sex crimes have been reported in the precinct so far in 2024 than at the same time in 2023 – an increase of 22% and 28%, respectively.
