Seven children among 45 rescued people

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven children who were trapped in a flood while on a fishing trip at a pond in Jalan Tandek Kampung Longob, Kota Marudu, were among the 45 people rescued this afternoon.

In a statement issued today, the Sabah Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department’s operations centre said firefighters from Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene of the accident, about 14 kilometres away, after receiving an emergency call at 4.11pm.

“45 people, including 23 men, 15 women and seven children, were trapped on the opposite side of the river because a flood wave swept away the bridge.

“Firefighters rescued all victims using ropes and ladders. All victims were rescued and no injuries were reported,” the statement said.

The operation was terminated at 6:47 p.m., it said.
