Rape suspect kills woman’s mother and injures three others in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh

Kanpur, July 9. Two men accused of raping a woman broke into her house in Unnao district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday evening and opened fire indiscriminately, killing the woman’s mother and injuring three other family members, police officials said.

One of the accused then committed suicide, police said.

The attack occurred less than two months after the two accused in the rape case were released on bail.

The woman’s family said they contacted police last week and claimed the two defendants had received death threats.

The victim stated that the police did not take any action based on the complaint.

According to police, the accused and a third assistant entered the 20-year-old woman’s house, carrying both domestic rifles in .312 and .315 caliber as well as stabbing weapons.

One of the men opened fire in the room where the woman and six of her family members were sleeping. According to police, he killed her mother and injured her father and two sisters.

“On the complaint of the victim’s family, an FIR has been lodged with Fatehpur Chaurasi police. The FIR states that the attack was premeditated. The police have launched an investigation into the case. The absconders will be arrested soon,” said Inspector General of Police (Lucknow region) Prashant Kumar.

The woman’s father and her 24-year-old sister were taken to LLR Hospital in Kanpur for treatment and their condition is reportedly stable. Her 12-year-old sister is currently undergoing treatment at a local health facility, police said.

The police officer said one of the attackers killed himself near the woman’s home.

They said a video was found on the deceased defendant’s cellphone in which he allegedly said that he would kill the plaintiff and her family because he was falsely implicated in the rape case.

The other two attackers are on the run.

The gang rape defendants were arrested in August last year after the woman filed a complaint. They left prison on May 10 after being released on bail.

The rape accuser, who survived the attack on Monday, said her father approached Fatehpur Chaurasi police on July 3, suspecting a possible attack by the rape accused.

She added that the police did not provide them with any security or take any action against the accused.

Inspector General of Police Kumar admitted a “serious lapse” on the part of the police and said that officers responsible for their mistakes would be held accountable.

According to sources, Safipur Circle Officer Maya Rai will investigate the incident and submit a report as soon as possible.
