Woman found dead in NYC: 31-year-old shot, wrapped in plastic and dumped in Kips Bay

KIPS BAY, Manhattan (WABC) — The death of a woman found in a sleeping bag in Manhattan last week has been ruled a homicide and now her relatives are seeking justice.

The 31-year-old woman was found dead in front of 207 East 27th St. shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday.

Police said Monday that Yazmeen Williams was shot in the head before being wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the sleeping bag.

Surveillance video found by investigators shows a man in an electric wheelchair dragging the body to where it was eventually found. Witnesses said the body was left on the street along with garbage.

Williams’ family described her as someone who wanted to advocate for women’s rights and fight for victims in the justice system.

“She was beautiful, she was sweet, she had a college degree, she was just a good person,” said the victim’s aunt, Nisha Ramirez.

Her family and friends knew her as Yazzy. Her mother, Nicole Williams, said she started a new job with the city last week where she will help the homeless, and they planned to celebrate her mother’s birthday in a few weeks.

“I was so happy for her and so excited to spend my birthday with her, but now that’s not the case anymore, my baby is gone,” Williams said.

Now the victim’s relatives have erected a memorial in front of the building where she was found and are demanding justice.

“She wanted to go back to school, get her master’s degree, she wanted to go to law school, that was her ultimate goal, to go to law school,” Williams said.

Her relatives do not know who wanted to harm her, but say that whoever it was, is dangerous.

“It’s not safe because there’s still someone out there,” Ramirez said.

Sources assume that the victim knew the man in the wheelchair – but the motive is unclear.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
