NFL suspends Steelers CB Cameron Sutton for eight games

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton has been suspended for eight games without pay for violating the NFL’s code of conduct, the league announced Monday.

He is eligible to return on Tuesday, October 29, following the Steelers’ Week 8 game against the New York Giants.

Sutton, 29, entered a court diversion program in April to resolve a domestic violence case, court records show. He was charged with assault after turning himself in to the Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office on March 31 after being sought by police for weeks.

The NFL said an investigation into the incident found that Sutton violated the rules of conduct. Sutton will not appeal the penalty, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

At the time of his arrest, he was with the Lions, but Detroit released him after learning of the warrant against him. At the time of his release by the Lions, Sutton had completed one year of his three-year, $33 million contract, signed in 2023. Sutton started every game in his only season in Detroit, recording 1 interception, 1 forced fumble and 50 tackles.

The warrant was issued on March 7 after police in Florida responded to a 911 call from a home where Sutton allegedly beat a woman before fleeing the scene.

Last month he signed a one-year contract with the Steelers.

“My job is not to appeal to anyone else,” Sutton said last month when asked about his message to fans who might question his alleged actions.

“My job is to be the best version of myself. And how do I communicate that to the masses or how do I communicate that to everyone around me? I have complete control over that.

“So, I never worry about a narrative. I never worry about what people are necessarily saying, because obviously they most likely don’t know me any better than anyone else. … It’s just about your foundation, your morals, who you are as a human being individually and what you stand for. I hold my head up high. Everyone experiences adversity. Everyone experiences things in their life that can change either way. So it’s about how you stand by it and what you make of it.”

Before signing with Detroit, Sutton spent the first six years of his career in Pittsburgh as a cornerback for the Steelers. He recorded three interceptions in 2022, the final season of his first stint in Pittsburgh.
