Rock Valley woman hospitalized after accident in Sioux Center

Sioux Center, Iowa – A Rock Valley woman was hospitalized following a crash involving drivers from Houston, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma in Sioux Center on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

Sioux Center Police report that 23-year-old Kendry Sanchez Barrios of Houston, Texas was driving a 2006 Toyota eastbound on 16th Street Southwest in Sioux Center at approximately 8:20 p.m. They report that 65-year-old Daniel Vugteveen of Tulsa, Oklahoma was driving a 2023 Mitsubishi from Enterprise Rent-A-Car southbound on South Main Avenue (Highway 75).

The report states that Vugteveen was heading for a green light and Sanchez Barrios was heading for a red light but allegedly failed to stop and struck Vugteveen’s vehicle at the intersection. Next, we learn that Barrios allegedly continued driving and fled the scene of the accident. He was eventually found and charged.

The Sioux Center ambulance took a passenger in the Vugteveen vehicle, 89-year-old Viola Terpstra, to Sioux Center Health Hospital. Another motorist took Vugteveen to Sioux Center Health.

Damage to Sanchez Barrios’ Toyota was $8,000, and Vugteveen’s rented Mitsubishi sustained $10,000 in damage, making the vehicle a total loss.

Sanchez Barrios was charged with no insurance, no valid driver’s license, failure to report an accident involving personal injury and failure to obey a traffic control device.
