An Orange air quality warning has been issued in parts of Pennsylvania.

Counties under warning include Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster and York.

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – An Orange Air Quality Warning has been issued for most of central Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has predicted the day of action for Tuesday, July 9, for the Philadelphia and central Pennsylvania regions.

Counties under warning include Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster and York.

On Tuesday, predominantly sunny skies and temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius during the afternoon hours are expected to create the conditions for robust ozone development and formation in the orange category.

An Air Quality Action Day is declared when the AQI is forecast to be orange or higher. On Air Quality Action Days, young children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit their outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses in the Air Quality Action Day areas are urged to voluntarily contribute to reducing air pollution by:

  • Save electricity by setting the air conditioning to a higher temperature;
  • Combining errands to reduce the number of car trips;
  • Limiting engine idling; and
  • Refueling cars and trucks after dark.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index provides color-coded daily air quality forecasts and reports. Green indicates good air quality, yellow indicates moderate air quality, orange indicates unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups, and red warns of unhealthy pollution levels for everyone.
