At least 3 dead in Houston area during Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON – At least three people were killed in the Houston area as Hurricane Beryl made landfall.

Two of the three deaths were caused by falling trees and another person died in a house fire.

As Beryl made landfall around 4 a.m. in Matagorda Bay, wind gusts exceeded 75 mph.

Early Monday morning in Atascocita, a tree fell on a home in the 20900 block of Heather Grove Ct, trapping two residents inside.

A 53-year-old man was reportedly trapped and unconscious. He was sitting in the house with his family, waiting for the storm to subside, when an oak tree fell on the roof, causing the structure to collapse on him. He was later pronounced dead.

His wife and children were unharmed. Another occupant was taken to hospital with injuries.

In another incident Monday morning in northwest Houston, a person reported a tree fell through the roof of her grandmother’s bedroom in the 17400 block of Rustic Canyon Trail. The 74-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an interview with Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña, he confirmed that at least one person has died following a house fire.

It happened on Bendell Road, near the Gulf Fwy, a few miles from Hobby Airport.

On Wednesday, when Beryl was a powerful Category 4 storm, at least seven people were killed as the storm moved through Jamaica, according to the Associated Press.
