Maine speedway worker hospitalized after ‘strange accident’

An employee at Speedway 95 in Hermon was hospitalized Sunday after an accident involving an ATV and a race car that the track manager described as a “freak accident.”

The accident occurred during the main race of Sport 4 (a division for four-cylinder racing cars) when the race was slowed down due to a yellow flag, Shawn Ryder, track manager and racing director for Speedway 95 Promotions Inc., said in a statement.

A track employee drove onto the track in an all-terrain vehicle to help the car that had been hit with the caution flag, but he was blinded by the sun and did not see the car coming toward him, Ryder said.
