Man charged in strangulation incident | News

A Mount Pleasant man’s “strange” behavior at a work event on July 6 led to an altercation with his girlfriend during which the suspect allegedly attempted to strangle his partner, according to a police report.

The perpetrator in question, Garrett Crede, 31, was arrested for first-degree domestic violence after city police discovered a red mark on the victim’s neck and additional bruising on her right wrist and pinky finger during an examination.

The complainant informed authorities about Crede’s excessive drinking the previous evening at a work meeting on King Street in Charleston. When the concerned woman noticed her boyfriend’s unusual behavior toward co-workers, she suggested that they leave and go home.

The recommendation reportedly angered Crede – he is described as a white man who is between 5’10” and 6’6″ tall and weighs 200 pounds – and decided to order another drink at the Cocktail Club.

After the man’s partner finished his drink, she attempted to call an Uber bike to take him back to her home in Mount Pleasant. The alleged perpetrator responded with spite, verbally abusing her and making a rude comment about her genitals.

After luring him home, Crede reportedly flew into a rage, breaking a glass coffee table and ripping the victim’s black Gucci bag. He pounded on the locked bedroom door, where his girlfriend fled, but the defendant eventually gained entry and put his hands around her neck as they both fell onto the bed.

The report states: “She does not remember how long he held on (,), but she stated that she fainted. She does not remember how she managed to escape (,), but she was able to pull him away from her and left the room.”

Crede followed her into the living room and continued to choke the woman, causing her to lose consciousness a second time, the report continues. When she regained consciousness, the alleged attacker ordered her to leave his house.

She tried to gain entry again to get her phone, wallet and dog, but could only access her mobile device, which she used to start her Tesla, police said.

When police arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m., they spotted Crede’s car in his driveway. When they called him, officers were told he was not home and was on his way to Columbia. However, when officers heard the knock on their door on the other end of the call, they advised him to step outside.

Crede had bruises on his hands, which were covered in dried blood. He was subsequently handcuffed and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center on Leeds Avenue.

Mount Pleasant police are awaiting written statements from a witness who lives nearby.
