The Atlanta Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to approve the selection of Dr. Bryan Johnson as the next superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools.

Dr. Johnson’s first official day on the job will be August 5. Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle will support him in this transition.

“This is an exciting day for APS as we welcome Dr. Johnson to our community,” School Board President Erika Y. Mitchell said in a news release. “I want to thank my fellow board members for their dedication and perseverance throughout the superintendent search process.”

The Atlanta Board of Education announced Johnson as the sole finalist for the school district’s top job on June 18. APS, one of the state’s largest school districts with about 50,000 students, had been without a full-time superintendent for nearly a year.

“Atlanta is a workplace destination and I look forward to working collaboratively with the board to ensure our students are prepared for their futures,” Johnson said in the statement.
