One dead when fireworks prevent rescue from burning car

Police said the amount of fireworks in the car made it difficult to rescue the person inside.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Police said one person died Sunday night when their vehicle caught fire following a crash in St. Paul.

Officials said officers were called to the area of Wilson Avenue and Howard Street near the St. Paul-Maplewood border for a car crash.

According to police, the car left the road and hit a tree and a light pole before coming to a stop and catching fire.

The car was full of fireworks and when they exploded, would-be rescuers struggled to help the person in the burning vehicle.

Officials said the driver did not survive. As of Monday morning, authorities have not released any further information about him. The Ramsey County coroner will identify the driver and determine the cause of death in the next few days.

In a press release, police said preliminary findings indicate that excessive speed was one of the causes of this fatal accident.

The incident is still under investigation, officials said.
